Hi, I’m James!

I’m a born and raised Newfoundlander who now calls Alberta home. After living in Calgary for almost 10 years, I’ve helped countless Newfoundlanders find their new home in Calgary.

I can’t wait to welcome you and show you everything Calgary has to offer! I’ll give you the best combination of local expertise, plus the experience of knowing what it’s like to start fresh in a new province.

Moving to a new province can be a daunting and exciting experience all at the same time. That’s why I’m here to guide you through the whole process. Whether you’re just looking for a quick chat or you’re ready to start house hunting, I’m happy to help—no strings attached.

I’m here to help with all of the things you can’t find in a quick Google search, like which neighbourhoods are right for your lifestyle—and of course—where to find salt meat!

FAQs About Alberta & Calgary

  • Out of all of the benefits of moving to Alberta, this is the one area where Alberta gets the most hate. However, as newfies, we’re very familiar with bad weather!

While Alberta does get cold snaps in the winter (minus 20 or colder brrrr), the biggest difference is how much sun we get here. A cold day doesn’t feel as cold when there isn’t a cloud in the sky. Plus, it’s a dry cold, and the lack of RDF makes it a lot easier to stay warm.

  • Calgary has so much to offer no matter what you’re into! There is a great shopping and restaurant scene here and you can find food to suit all tastes.

With the mountains and Banff so close, spending time there skiing and biking are some of my favourite past times.

Enjoying the Bow River in Calgary is also a popular activity in the summer. Many people “float the bow” or take a raft down the gentle river.

Edmonton is similar with lots shops and restaurants, you’re just a little further from the mountains.

  • Generally, yes, particularly if you’re moving to one of the big cities like Edmonton or Calgary. Like most big cities, the housing prices and rental costs are higher when compared to a small city like St. Johns.

You can save some money on housing prices by looking in the right neighbourhoods or in communities outside of the big cities.

However, you automatically save 10% on most purchases, because there is no HST in Alberta, just 5% GST.

Alberta also has a better job market, with higher-paying jobs in industries like energy and tech. But I’m sure you knew that already as that’s why most Newfies move here!

  • After finding your new home, there are a few (not so fun) paperwork things you’ll need to do like:

    • Get an Alberta driver’s license

    • Set up utilities (gas, electric, and water are generally lumped into one and serviced through private providers like Enmax)

    • Register for Alberta Health and get you health care card.
